UTVs, sometimes called side-by-sides, are a great way to explore the outdoors. But what about when the weather gets cold? Winter is a beautiful season, and it would be a shame to let your UTV sit in storage for several months when you could be riding around. Follow these snow riding tips from M2 Outdoor for a safe and fun time out on the trail.

Prepare Your UTV for the Cold

Your UTV is tough, but cold weather poses unique challenges that you have to take into account. Start by switching your oil and other fluids to a winter formulation. That will help prevent them from freezing over and damaging your engine.

There are also several winter upgrades that can help make your side-by-side better suited to the snow. For example, a snow plow attachment can help you clear the trail of snow. Snow tires help your UTV to grip the trail. You may even choose to install treads for even greater traction, though we recommend getting help from our service department before taking such a drastic step.

We also highly recommend finding a good snow cover to help keep the wind and snow off of you. At the very least, try to find a windscreen to keep the wind chill away.

Staying Warm

Remember that riding at high speeds will mean a lot of wind chill. Besides insulated gloves and hand warmers, you should use safety gear like helmets and goggles like always. If your summer helmet isn’t keeping you warm, try switching to a motorcycle-style helmet that fully covers your face. As always, dress in layers.

Good Snow Safety Practices

While modifications can help your side-by-side conquer a snowy trail, you should also modify your driving habits to account for the snow. If you try to ride the same way you always do, you may find yourself skidding and sliding all over the place. Drive slower than normal, and be wary of ice patches, especially if the weather is warming. Of course, all the general safety advice still applies, like only riding when sober and staying hydrated.
